Taking the next step!

I'm based in the US and really want to break into commercial diving, preferably in a well paying area of the industry. I first looked into schools in Australia since i'd love to work there, but didn't get any responses, so now i'm focusing on schools here in the States. My concern is that once I finish training, it might be tough to land that first job, especially since Ive heard most new divers have to take small gigs wherever they can just to build experience . For those of you who started out in places without a lot of local work, how did you manage in the beginning?

I don't want t discourage you, but the small gigs are something you won't be able to avoid. Depending on how much time you invest, you can get out of this phase sooner or later. Networking, getting contact or trying to get into the big league and it should be a bit smoother from that point on, depending on your approach. Just stay focused and keep track of your goal and you'll be closer to it in no time.

Start with the small, dirty jobs just to get your hours up. If you're flexible on travel and willing to take whatever comes at first, it snowballs because networking on those early gigs is what usually gets you into the better paying commercial work
